Parent Coaching

with Erika Andersen Ko, MEd, CLVT

You are the expert on your child

Education and medical services for low vision are complex. I help you understand the functional implications, such as what your child's vision means for learning, literacy needs, and moving through the school day.

I coach parents navigating a child's vision diagnosis, finding vision services, or working on adaptive skills at home. My online services are especially helpful for private school or homeschool families, who may not have access to public school vision services or choose not to use them.

What Happens Now, and What's Ahead

Many parents leave eye appointments or IEP meetings with more questions than answers about what their child's vision means for their lives. They want to understand what their child's vision needs are now, and what they will be at ten, at sixteen, at twenty-five.

You don't have to know all of that today. I've supported families at every one of those ages. When we work together, we figure out what matters now, what can wait and how to plan for what's ahead.

How I Help

I start by working with you as a parent, listening to what's causing you the most vision-specific stress. Together we might review medical and educational documents or explore ways to support your child's use of vision and other senses. We might also identify community resources to address unmet needs.

In some cases, such as when a child attends a private school or is homeschooled, I also work directly with your child on educational needs.

Together, we might work on

  • Managing vision-specific stress within your family
  • Preparing for 504 and IEP meetings
  • Creating activities to practice adaptive skills your child needs in a visually demanding world

Once we begin working together, I'll need a recent report from your child's eye doctor. If your child doesn't have a current low vision exam, which focuses on how they use their vision, I'll ask you to schedule one. I stay in touch with your doctor about our work, and based on your preference, with the school team.

A Family's Experience

From a parent

"Erika has been able to ... effectively bridge the gap between the academic and medical worlds. Her positive presence and well-informed guidance ... has made an otherwise overwhelming situation seem not only manageable but also reassuring and encouraging for all involved. Most importantly, our daughter loves working with her and feels more confident and prepared, knowing how to understand and navigate her own needs and advocate for herself."

About Erika

Navigating educational and medical services for your child can be a full-time job. A kindergartner's mom shared that my support brought her relief and more time and energy for the rest of her family and life.

I trained in visual disabilities at Vanderbilt University, and I provide services in pediatric low vision clinics, alongside school districts, and directly with families. Envision recognized my work with its 2026 Oculus Award, given for international or national impact for people who are blind or have low vision. My work is rooted in the Expanded Core Curriculum, the areas where a child with low vision needs additional support, from literacy and accommodations to managing the vision-specific stress that may affect learning. I work alongside you and your child's low vision team.
